How Long Will It Take To Recover From My Car Accident?
If you've been in an accident or had a slip and fall and you got neck or back pain, unfortunately, this can drag on for a long time.
I had a patient who had been in pain for almost a year and this was the question she had asked me. My answer I said to her was...
"It depends on what type of shape you're in before the accident, how bad was your accident and your injuries, and then what type of shape you get into after your accident."
Now, the problem is a lot of people want to rely on other people to fix themselves, and I'm not saying that that's necessarily a bad thing, but you really have to take personal responsibility for your own recovery.
And if you decide to put it in somebody else's hands, you're on their schedule. Sometimes overzealous providers have you to believe they can fix everything by themselves, and the only catch is, you gotta keep coming back again and again and again to them in order to fix it. Even when it is not working. And so, people...
Throw their hands up in the air, and believe all I gotta do is just show up. He's gonna be taking care of me. But that doesn't always works out.
Just imagine if you lost the ability to walk, and had to relearn this skill. This wouldn't be a thing that you do every once in a while, two or three times out the week. You trying to learn how to walk.
This would be your new, everyday job. And that's the way you have to think about it. You know, if you were perfectly healthy, I would tell you, you need to stretch and exercise on a regular basis. And some people might do that two to three times out the week, like going to the gym.
But if you are injured, you can't believe that will be enough to get you back to health. If you are in pain all the time, your regular routine is just not enough.
One of the things that I teach people is how to rehab yourself, and that doesn't mean that you can't get help along the way. But if you're not doing what you need to do on a regular basis, you could be prolonging your recovery.
That is basically what I had to tell her. She had been in pain, for a whole year, and she was asking me what to do.
"I've been doing all the stuff that they said for me to do, and yet I'm still in pain."
So I had to break it down to her and that was the answer I gave to her question. The same question that I get all the time. How long is my pain gonna last?
I always joke around, I don't have a crystal ball to be able to tell you exactly how long your pain is going to last, but I can tell you it's likely going to last longer if you're not putting in the work to do the steps in order to get you better. And that starts with doing stuff like the Wade Method.
